How a 13 year-old teen turned a $4,000 fun video in a $200,000 profit!(Source: ABC Nightline) I can almost smell the cynicism on your breath and see the sneer forming on your lips. Sure if you have $4,000 to kick around, you can make a good video. Ah . . . but that's not the point now, is it?
To make a great video and have it go viral doesn't need to cost $4,000. In fact, to create a kick-ass video all you really need is an HD FlipCam for about $200 and a theme or idea. Put the music up front. Take the time to produce a good product. That means the sound recording has to be well produced and the video has to take a back seat to the music. Don't put out half-baked product if you want a long career - on the other hand, you're not expected to be Steven Spielberg right out of the gate. Windows Essentials has a great free video editor with some good features, so you can make a great video without turning to a life of crime.
Rebecca Black hit her target market right between the eyes. She's talking to other 13 year-olds. Most of her haters are "serious" musicians and "connoisseurs" - again missing the point. "Friday" is a teeny bopper song at its finest. It's catchy. The song is authentic Rebecca and she's adorable. There is no hidden agenda. Rebecca wrote a song that resonates with her target market. They understand her point of view. Rebecca understands her point of view. When these kind of factors align, you'll always have a popular tune with viral potential.
I say potential because the next step is marketing. I'm sure Rebecca shared a link with a few friends, who shared the link with a few friends, who also shared the link with a few friends and the daggone song built up a buzz - so much so it was picked up by Nightline about a month after languishing on YouTube. Now "Friday" has over 128 million hits. Hate it or not, the video and song has earned over $200,000 and that IS the point.
